React vs Vue vs Angular: A Detailed Comparison for System Design
Compare React, Vue, and Angular across performance, architecture, ecosystem, and developer experience to choose the right frontend framework.
React vs Vue vs Angular
React, Vue, and Angular are the three dominant frontend frameworks. React is a composable UI library, Vue is a progressive framework, and Angular is a full-featured enterprise platform. Each represents a different philosophy about how frontend applications should be built.
React: The Composable Library
React focuses solely on the view layer. You compose UIs from components using JSX, manage state with hooks or external libraries, and choose your own routing and data-fetching solutions. This flexibility is both its strength (you pick what you need) and weakness (decision fatigue for new projects).
The React ecosystem is the largest: Next.js for SSR/SSG, React Native for mobile, and thousands of component libraries.
Vue: The Progressive Framework
Vue offers an approachable template syntax that feels like enhanced HTML. Its reactivity system (Proxy-based in Vue 3) is fine-grained — only components that depend on changed data re-render. Nuxt.js provides the SSR/SSG story similar to Next.js for React.
Vue's single-file components (template + script + style) keep related code together, and the Composition API brings React-hook-like flexibility.
Angular: The Enterprise Platform
Angular is a complete framework: routing, forms, HTTP client, dependency injection, and testing utilities are all built in. It uses TypeScript exclusively and enforces patterns that scale to large teams with strict conventions.
System Design Frontend Choices
In a system design interview, the frontend framework choice rarely makes or breaks the design. What matters is demonstrating understanding of caching strategies, CDN usage, server-side rendering for SEO, and state management patterns.
All three frameworks support SSR, code splitting, and lazy loading. Choose based on team expertise and organizational context. For deeper comparisons, see our technology guides and interview preparation resources.
