Two complementary mechanisms that keep distributed replicas in sync — one fixes inconsistencies proactively in the background, the other fixes them reactively at read time.
Challenge: Your database is "eventually consistent"... until it isn't
You run a globally distributed key-value store with 5 replicas per key. Writes are fast and available even during partitions. You accept eventual consistency.
It's Friday night. A customer updates their delivery address. Minutes later, your support dashboard shows the old address, while the mobile app shows the new one. Two hours later, a warehouse prints labels using the old address.
You check the cluster: no single node is "down." Network partitions came and went. Some replicas missed updates. Now you have divergent replicas.
Your challenge: How do you make replicas converge again--without turning every write into a global transaction?

You read from A and B, detect C is stale, but C is unreachable.

2) Replica returns corrupted or partial data
If a replica has bit rot or corrupted SSTable:

3) Concurrent writes during repair

You must avoid overwriting newer data with older data.
